September 2011 - Publication of The International Parents Charter

Few fencing parents forget the moment that their fencer wins a place on the GB cadet or junior squad. It can seem like a dream come true! But for some parents the dream can turn into a nightmare when they calculate the cost of sending their child on four or more international trips a year. Until the Parents Group intervened, fencing parents could do little to reduce costs (applies only to some of the international trips) – all travel purchasing was managed centrally through British Fencing. One of the early tasks of the Parents Group was to negotiate and agree with British Fencing that fencers should be allowed to travel independently from the main squad in order to take advantage of cheaper travel, deals and discounts or to use more convenient routes and travel times. British Fencing and the Parents Group used this opportunity to make some commitments to each other on the way in which they should work together to make the competitions as enjoyable and efficient as possible.
